Five engravings depicting torture scenes, created by Johann Daniel HERZ (1693-1754), a German engraver, painter, and publisher, who worked in Augsburg, his hometown.
He was among the founders of the "Kaiserlich Franziskiche Academie," a publishing house specializing in panoramic views and religious prints.
Each of these five engravings, created by Herz and published by August Vindel (Publisher), depicts a scene of torture perpetrated by torturers against subjects already convicted by the Inquisition for crimes related to heresy against the church. These are part of a series of scenes: this can be deduced from the fact that the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig has some of them and each one, like these, has a progressive number (X, 2, 4, 5, 12). In creating these scenes, Johann Daniel HERZ drew inspiration from the depictions published by Antonio Gallonio, Sagittarius, and Christian Korthold.
Approximate sheet size: 30 cm x 20 cm.
