Battle axe, Grimani family, Venice, 14th century

Small forged iron battle axe, dating back to between 1300 and 1350, belonging to a noble soldier or knight belonging to the Venetian Grimani family.

On one side, in fact, is carved the noble emblem of the family, composed of a shield with eight vertical pieces containing a small (vermilion) cross, and the motto "Deo Favente," meaning "with the favor of God." This probably refers either to the expression that was an integral part of the family coat of arms at the time, or to a true insignia inciting battle, a sign of good luck.

The axe was crafted in the infantry style, very small and sharp enough to be used in one-handed close combat, while the soldier could wield a sword or similar weapon with the other, thus achieving ideal balance for powerful, quick, and precise blows with both weapons.

The axe head is grafted onto what is believed to be its original handle.

For the reasons mentioned above, we can conclude that this small battle axe belongs to a descendant of one of the Two brothers, Servidio or Prospero, of the noble Grimani family, who, according to some genealogical scholars, appear to have fought in the Holy Land alongside Godfrey of Bouillon (French ruler and leader of the First Crusade). Indeed, thanks to their heroic deeds in various battles, the latter granted them the "little cross" to be added to their coat of arms, which had already been developed for identification and distinction, especially in military and chivalric contexts, around the 10th century.

The Grimanis were a Venetian noble family that played a significant role in the city's history, with family members holding positions such as Knights, Men-at-Arms, Doges, Patricians, and many other important public offices.

The Grimani family is today remembered, represented, and known throughout the world, not least for the countless and priceless architectural works belonging to them, present throughout the Venetian territory.
