Stéréo-Jumelle 5x25 E. Krauss & Cie Paris, S.G.D.G. (License Carl Zeiss), about 1896

Stéréo-Jumelle or Binocular Stereo, produced in small numbers by E. Krauss & Cie in Paris, licensed by Carl Zeiss in 1896, with 5 magnifications, oculars lens of 13 mm and 25 mm objective lens.

On the left plate are engraved the following informations: "Stereo-Jumelle Zeiss N° 3769 Bte S.G.D.G." where "Bté" means "breveté" or patented, S.G.D.G. is the abbreviation for "Sans Garantie du Gouvernement" or "Without Warranty of Government."
On the right plate instead there are the informations about the producer "Eugen Krauss & Compagnie Paris".
This rare binoculars born by the extraordinary collaboration between two of the most important companies of the time which were strained by the interest to the development and improvement of all the optical instrumentation.
Besides this, this binoculars is a precedent for the fundamental optical-mechanical history: it was the milestone which marked later and extraordinary cooperation which led to the improvement of existing optical patents for the purpose of further improvement.
The vision is clear, sharp and collimated. All mechanisms are running smoothly and properly. Its impressive weight is about 800 Gr.

Histori of E. Krauss:

E. Krauss was a French camera and lens maker, founded in the late 1880s. Founder Eugen Krauss was the brother of G. A. Krauss (Gustav Adolf Krauss). The company had a license to produce lens types of Carl Zeiss.
When Leitz named its 35mm camera it preferred "Leica" instead of "Leca" for not to collide with the name of E. Krauss' French "L´Eka"
In addition to cameras and camera lenses, Krauss produced Telescopes and Binoculars, many of them Zeiss models sold under license.
