Lighting Cables for German Optical Devices and Battery Boxe, circa 1938

A set of electrical accessories for optical instruments, consisting of a series of connecting cables designed to power lighting devices applied to optical devices and precision instruments. The components feature different terminal and connection configurations, consistent with connection systems used by optical equipment manufacturers, including blc, cxn, ddv, Carl Zeiss Jena, Hildebrand Wichamnn Freiberg, Krieger & Faudt, and others.

The assembly also includes a camouflage battery box, marked "bmj," the manufacturer's code for M. Hensoldt & Söhne – Mechanisch-Optische Werke AG, intended to provide an independent power source for the illumination cables. Designed as auxiliary components for the instrumentation, the cables connected the power source to the lighting devices, contributing to the illumination conditions required for reticle observation in poor nighttime visibility. From a historical and technological perspective, the collection is of documentary interest as it sheds light on power systems and the ways in which electrical illumination was integrated into optical instruments.

They were used to illuminate reticles in binoculars and periscopes such as Scherenfernrohr, D.F. 10x80 flakglas binoculars, various types of Kriegsmarine binoculars, cannon optics, machine gun optics, and many other models. A significant historical testament to the technological ingenuity and production capacity of German industry is the commitment of numerous companies specializing in optical, mechanical, and electrical engineering, called upon to meet the growing need for illumination of aiming reticles for nighttime warfare.

In an era when reduced visibility was one of the main obstacles to the effectiveness of observation and aiming instruments, optical reticle illumination assumed strategic importance. German industries were therefore committed to the development and production of technical solutions capable of making aiming references distinguishable even in darkness, without excessively compromising the operator's ability to observe the target, nor that of being seen by the enemy.
