T.Z.F. 5d (Turm-Zielfernrohr 5d) optics manufactured by "beh," the code name for the Ernst Leitz Wetzlar company (under the direction of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht), were used as a targeting device on Panzer III medium tanks during World War II. Designed for target acquisition and engagement, they provided a fixed magnification of 2.5x with a 25° field of view, offering an adequate compromise between accuracy and a wide field of view.
The unit was installed on Panzers equipped with the 5 cm KwK 38 L/42 gun, from the last examples of the Ausführung F series up to the Ausführung J series. The optical system was integrated for use with both the main armament and the coaxial MG 34 machine gun, ensuring operational versatility in different combat scenarios.
The highly complex aiming reticle is calibrated to allow for range estimation and ballistic compensation, making it suitable for effective shooting at targets at various distances.
The optic offers a clear visual quality without significant clouding. The adjustment mechanisms are fully functional, confirming the operational integrity of the device.
